Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading — a save button is still presented, of course, in case you’re convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We’d like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon — like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won’t notice the icon or change in wording as they’ll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you’ll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Nokia goes bullet time on snowboarders, the ’90s wants its culture back (video)

Nokia bullet time

Nokia’s been an annual fixture at the Open Snowboarding Championships for a few years. While one gets sponsorship dollars, the other gleans a slice of snow sport cool. At this year’s event, Nokia rigged up 18 Lumia 800s to capture the snowboarders’ mid-air posturing, recording the video with a specially developed app. After a WiFi hook-up (and presumably a little bit of editing), the result was the montage you can see up top, made from around 100 different videos. But where’s the iShred?

Video: 2013 Subaru BRZ tested at 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, 1/4 mile in 15.3

2013 Subaru BRZ in blue taking a corner at speed - video screencap

The 2013 Subaru BRZ is “one of the most rewarding cars we’ve ever driven” says Edmunds after subjecting the new coupe to some track time. This, despite having a 0-60 time that rivals that of some minivans – 7.3 seconds. Inside Line says those numbers are mostly due to an overactive rev limiter that forces a third-gear shift at 59.2 mph. We bet that’s an early tuner fix. Also likely to be improved with an aftermarket reflash is the 15.3-second quarter-mile time.

So you won’t be winning many stoplight drag races in box-stock form, but as we all know, there’s far more to a fun car than just straight-line numbers. According to IL, “the BRZ offers a level of engagement that, until now, has been either too costly or too impractical for the average enthusiast.” They even go so far as to compare the BRZ’s overall character to a Lotus Exige and the beastly Porsche 911 GT3(!).

No, the BRZ can’t hang with either of those hardcore Europeans, but Inside Line says its balanced mixture of handling, cost, every day usability, and practicality make for “a perfect balance between date nights and track days.” Check out the video after the jump.

Buchberger Best at Daytona

The series runner-up in 2011 Season Four in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) was top of the board when it came to the standings for Week Four in the 2012 Season One at the Daytona International Speedway. Brandon Buchberger took the top point total out of Daytona as 2,400 sim  racers took to the repaved, virtual high banks to look for super speedway glory in Round Four of the online racing series. Buchberger?s win came during a 4012 Strength of Field (SoF) of race on Tuesday in which he led just nine of the 50 laps en route to the victory. Second place belonged to Frank Kimmel II while Jeremy Harrington, Wes Weidman and pole-sitter Stephen Moore completed the top five. Moore led the most laps in the [...]

HRT not ready to rejoin FOTA yet

HRT is not yet ready to rejoin FOTA, despite team principal Luis Perez-Sala making an appearance at this week’s Fans’ Forum event in Barcelona. The Spain-based outfit quit FOTA at the beginning of 2010, when then team principal Colin Kolles grew frustrated with the organisation and the costs of its membership.

Grosjean: Lotus feels as good as before

Romain Grosjean says his Lotus feels just as good now as it did in the opening test, despite the revisions his outfit was forced to make to its front suspension. The team had to pull out of the first Barcelona test last week after it found a problem with the front suspension of the E20. The issue meant the team had to make changes to the chassis, also adding an extra kilogram of weight to it

Strength in Numbers

As the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series went south for the always thrilling trip to Daytona, everyone knew it would be a big week.  But what happened shattered expectations across the board. This trip to Daytona was unlike any in the past, as it marked the first time official online races on iRacing’s digital version of the the freshly repaved Daytona International Speedway surface. Laser-scanned to identically match the massive 2.5mi superspeedway, the “new” Daytona afforded iRacing members the thrill of competing on the same proving grounds as their physical world counterparts Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Greg Biffle & Co. The iRacing.com software utilizes “Strength of Field” (SoF) to determine how many points are paid-out at the conclusion of the race. The SoF is determined by the average of [...]
